1Up Box APOCALYPSE vs Loot Crate PLAY February 2015

Welcome to the first installment of my 1Up Box vs Loot Crate series!  They're both monthly subscription boxes full of geeky goodies.  They both arrive around the same time so I love comparing the two.  I pay around the same price for both boxes (close to $19 each) but 1Up Box started out much cheaper initially, so their box is usually smaller and has cheaper items.  It doesn't affect me though because you definitely get a shirt in each 1Up Box and I love seeing which new designs they come up with!

Let's start with 1Up Box, shall we?  The theme was Apocalypse, so we have some zombie and war themed stuff.

1Up Box

Stress Relief Grenade
Stress Relief Grenade:  I was kinda disappointed in this because it seems like a rather cheap item, but I guess it matches the theme and would be useful sometimes.

Apocalypse Pin
Apocalypse Pin:  How cute is this?  I never had the luxury of playing video games growing up, but I can appreciate how cute Kirby is.  What do people do with all these pins, by the way?  I want to keep them, but I'm not sure where to put them all.

Hand Sanitizer
Hand Sanitizer:  This was another filler item in the box, but it'd come in handy for me since I work with animals and need to clean my hands often.

1Up Sour Candies
1Up Sour Candies:  If you open the mushroom hat, it reveals some mushroom shaped sour candies.  Turns out subscribers got either the red mushroom or green mushroom.  I was ecstatic about getting the green one because not only is it the true 1Up mushroom, but I also have the red mushroom tin at home already :D  Now I have both, I just need to eat these candies to clean out the tins to use them for something else.

Walking Dead Wind Up
Walking Dead Wind Up:  This is a wind up toy from the Walking Dead series.  I only watched the first few seasons so I'm not exactly sure who this is.  The Governor?  I'll most likely be giving this to my coworker's son since it holds no meaning to me.

Super Cross Bros shirt
Super Cross Bros shirt:  I love this Kirby and Walking Dead mashup!  Kirby is modeled after popular character Daryl Dixon and there are the wind up zombies in the background (proving this shirt design is exclusive to the box).  I really love how soft this shirt too, it's extremely comfortable and stretchy.

Life stickers
Legend of Zelda Life Stickers:  I'm really not sure what to do with stickers, I kind of wish they were magnets but I want to keep them haha.

Loot Crate

PLAY book
Play book:  This is a little magazine explaining the various things we received in the box and some relevant articles or interviews.  I actually love these magazines because they do have interesting things sometimes and this one included some pop out action figures that we're supposed to use for the board game the box turns into.

Hex Bug
Hex Bug:  These are little mechanical bug toys that supposedly run around like real bugs.  Subscribers got different bugs and I happened to get the ant one.  I think I would have preferred the scarab because that looks a lot cooler, but the ant is not bad.

PLAY Pin
Play pin:  Like I said before, I like getting these, I just don't know what to do with them...

Rock Paper Scissors die
Rock Paper Scissors die:  a pair of die that came in a small velvet pouch with rock, paper, and scissor hands on all sides.  These are supposed to be used for the board game, but you can probably use them with your friends as well.  The die themselves have a weight to them so they are not cheaply made at all.

Exclusive Blank Munny
Exclusive Blank Munny:  Honestly, I would've preferred an already painted Munny figure, but I guess this gives me the freedom to actually make one I like.  Too bad I'm so lazy.

Firefly game code
Firefly game code:  This is a game code for an online Firefly game, but I mainly just use it as a cool looking postcard.

Pac Man Poster
Pac Man Poster:  this is a really cool blueprint of the classic Pac Man arcade game.  It's on a nice poster material as well, so I'm going to hang this up on my wall.

Ready Player One book
Ready Player One book:  a book!  I'm actually really excited for an inclusion of a book.  I don't have a lot of time to read anymore, but I love receiving this and being able to pick it up at a later date.  I wasn't sure what it was about based on the vague summary, but it seems very interesting.

Board Game box
Board Game box:  Lastly, the Loot Crate box itself unfolds into a board game!  I really like this aspect of Loot Crate, each month they actually decorate the box so you can do something with it.  The box isn't there for packaging and it's one of the things I really look forward to each month.  This particular box unfolds to become a board game and you get characters from the magazine and use the rock paper scissors dice to play.

I started this series not as a contest between the two boxes, but more of a comparison.  Loot Crate obviously has more expensive items and 1Up Box seems to be geared more towards children.  I love both boxes equally, but I have to hand it to Loot Crate this month.  I really enjoyed the book, poster, and Hex Bug, as opposed to just liking the shirt and candy from 1Up.  I don't think it's right to really compare the two because the themes are different.  I'm not huge on apocalypse but I do love games!  I'm looking forward to a 1Up Box with a theme I enjoy.

  1. It super easy to turn stickers into magnets. Just stick them onto a magnetic sheet and cut around the edges. I use free promotional magnets like this all the time. Also, I really enjoyed Ready Player One. I think it's a really good choice given the theme of the box.

    1. I'll keep that in mind, thank you! I'm glad you liked the book, it seems really interesting based on the blurb. Did you get the book from Loot Crate as well?
